THE world’s oldest known dinosaurs have been uncovered in Madagascar. The long-necked, small-headed plant-eaters may have been the ancestors of the lumbering sauropods that became the largest land animals ever. Previously, the oldest dinosaurs known were two-legged predators that lived about 228 million years ago in Argentina. The two new finds, probably about the size of kangaroos, lived about 230 million years ago when Argentina, Madagascar and Africa were part of the supercontinent of Pangaea. “Knowing what the earliest members of the two branches looked like helps us understand their common ancestor,” says John Flynn of the Field Museum in Chicago.
