By Barry Fox THE rush to get DVD players into the shops is causing problems for movie buyers. Because the standards for these high-capacity video discs have not yet been finalised, some DVD players are refusing to play discs of a hit movie. Warner’s sci-fi movie The Matrix, which is currently number two in the American DVD charts, is the first mass-market DVD to contain additional features in the form of games, quizzes and hidden Web links, which are available when the disc is played on a PC. These features work perfectly well. Dedicated DVD players are supposed to ignore these extra codes. But ambiguities in the standard mean that a number of machines misread them as errors and spit out the disc. The problem may spread beyond the US when The Matrix is released in Europe at the end of this month. A broad standard for DVD was set in 1996. It includes an electronic index that lets people navigate through scenes in any order by remote control, and branch off into side sequences—for instance, to learn the secrets behind special effects.
